MARCEL·LÍ ANTÚNEZ ROCA

  • Sistematurgy, method and examples of the dramaturgies of computational systems.

'Sistematurgy' is a neologism created by Marcel.lí Antúnez Roca to name the methodology that uses in his works related to art and technology since the earlies 90’s of the XX century. 'Sistematurgy' literary means dramaturgy of computational systems. Nowadays the Sistematurgy project is being developed in two fields: the own investigation which the artist carries out with his work, and the educational branch in which the artist exposes his methodology ideas in a conference format, workshops and labs.

The activities around the 'Sistematurgy' mean an important part of Marcel.lí Antúnez Roca's work. In its teaching aspect, the 'Sistematurgy' helps to expose his 30-year artistic career and explores into its methodological aspects, both from a theorical point of view as, when the lenght of the workshop allows it, in its practical aspects.

From the theoretical perspective are exposed the collective creation experiences with La Fura dels Baus, in the 80’s – Antúnez Roca was founder and leader of the group until 1990-, shows his mechatronic period, in his solo period,  which includes among others works, the performances Epizoo, Afasia and POL; and studies the works of the Membrana project, which includes the interactive performances Protomembrana, Hipermembrana and the interactive installation Metamembrana.

When the 'Sistematurgy' is performed in a lab format, which means during one week or more, the workshop also develops practical aspects which culminate with a public presentation. So in this format are used some of the hardware and software tools used by the artist, such the property software POL. The POL software arose as a tool for the script of the performance POL in 2002. Programmed by Jesús de la Calle who also updated it to its 3rd version. During 2010 and 2011 the workshop was held among others cities in Rome, El Cairo, Torino, Málaga, Alicante, San Sebastian and Cartago/San José both in Costa Rica.

The work of some of these workshops has had continuity like the one carried out in San Sebastian which, under the auspices of Arteleku and Tabakalera, is in a work in progress period (http://www.sistematurgyprozesuak.webeden.co.uk), or the one produced in Costa Rica which gave as a result the performance Mitotica (http://vimeo.com/29951644) and is expected to continue in 2012.
